A Much-Esteemed Painting: “The Great Day of His Wrath”

A painting that always fascinated and awed me as a boy,

The Great Day of His Wrath …

John Martin, 1853: Tate, London

“The Great Day of His Wrath” is John Martin’s depiction
of the Day of Judgment in which every man and woman
will be called to render an account –

not merely to account for the use they have made
of their time given upon this earth,
but even for every idle (never mind malicious) word
they have uttered.

I am pleased to hold the painting in such high regard,
for I find myself reminded of both painting and subject

on a regular basis …
